Organized Monolayers: Designed Nanomaterials
Prof. Dr. Dietmar Möbius, Max-Planck-Institut für Biophysikalische Chemie, Göttingen

Appropriate amphiphilic molecules like phospholipids form monomolecular layers at the air-water interface. Molecular packing in these monolayers is controlled externally by varying the surface pressure. Monolayers are characterized primarily by surface pressure/area and surface potential/area isotherms. Brewster angle microscopy provides detailed information on long range order. More sophisticated molecules with particular properties may be used to construct nanomaterials with interesting functions. Examples for such molecules are amphiphilic dyes with a crown ether moiety combining the possibility of photo-isomerization with specific complexation of metal ions. The organization of such molecules in monolayers as well as intermolecular interactions, photo-reactivity and complex formation has been investigated by reflection spectroscopy.
