Freezing of water and salt solutions „in silico“
Prof. Dr. Pavel Jungwirth, Prof. Inst. o. Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague

We present results of extensive molecular dynamics simulations of freezing of water and salt solutions. Our simulation provide a dynamical picture with atomistic resolution which can help to resolve atmopsherically relevant questions connected, e.g., with the surface vs bulk origin of homogeneous ice nucleation in high altitude clouds. We also provide the microscopic origin of the process of brine rejection from freezing sea water, which has important climatic implications in polar regions.
